I was going for a walk with my dad the other afternoon. It was a really nice day out and he had just come in the door, from wherever it is that he goes - he wears the same clothes every day when he walks out, so I’m sure it’s not that exciting. We went to the same areas that we always go, big patches of grass with little - and some not so little - reminders that I’m not the only dog around. I guess it was the time that all the people came in their doors because there were other dogs out as well …
Now, I don’t know how it is with everyone else, but after I’m done “doing-my-thing” I like to check things out, explore a little - and sometimes that includes other people that might be around too. So, I’ll bark and tug in hopes getting everyone’s attention. It works …
But the people don’t respond the way my dad does. He comes up to me, holds me, lets me lick him - I’m a Pug, I lick - and everything is great. These people act like I’m some terrible beast and turn away, sometimes walk quickly in another direction. I just want to say “HI”, but I guess they don’t. My dad tells me that they don’t understand me, that they think I’m being fiesty (whatever that means). But I’m not, I just want a little attention … I get it all the time in my own house, but things are different once we walk out that door.

Sure, some people are nice and say “hi” back. They’ll pat me on the head (which doesn’t really feel that good, but we’ll get into that another time), and leave. So, I bark more. And then they give the same strange looks I get from the others. I just don’t get it.
But I know this: if you see a Pug - myself included - and they start barking at you wildly, you can go ahead and say “hi”, or even just wave. We’re not mean, we’re mostly just saying “Look at me!” (Unless there’s a cat around, then all rules change - but we’ll get into that another time).
